Tiny Habits : book review

Chaos Theory. Butterfly Effect. If America sneezes India catches cold. Heard any of these? There’s one more, Small changes that change everything. The wonderful book by BJ Fogg, talks about the #tinyHabits. It is a well-researched book that has worked well for so many lives. Even if you develop #tinyNumber of them, that is enough to transform you.

It may not be necessary to go into #tinyDetails of the habits and #tinyWays to celebrate which are mentioned in the book.

There’s one #tinyFormula which goes like: B= MAP. It means our behaviour is the result of a combination of Motivation, Ability and Prompt. If any one of them is absent, that behaviour is not possible. He explained his Red Cross donation experience to support this nicely.

There is also a #tinyFlow which goes like: Anchor Moment, New Tiny Behavior, Instant Celebration! We need to define our “Anchor Moment” when we decide our “tiny behaviour”and act. As soon as the act is completed, we instantly celebrate it. This celebration gives us the required positivity to build tiny habits. The example he gives is : After I brush my teeth (Anchor Moment), I floss 1 tooth (tiny behaviour). As soon as you floss your tooth, in no time, celebrate by thumping your chest 3 times. Sounds weird? Doesn’t matter. It works. Literally.

One #tinyMoment comes when your #tinyHabits prompt you to stop reading further!  :-)

And you feel you already deal with a lot of monotony and predictability on a daily basis knowingly or unknowingly. And that these #tinyRecipes would just further add to it.

This is a #tinyReview. Please do not take it seriously! :-)

On a serious note, habits make us stronger. And the author is hell-bent to exploit our emotions to strengthen our drive to exercise that habit. He has done a solid research which is beyond any debate. Even the methodology of Anchor, Behavior and Celebrate makes perfect sense and works wonders. There are so many testimonials he referred to in his book. Celebration establishes a communication with your nervous system which triggers some emotions which in turn drive your habits. You just need to start a 5 day program and see the results yourself. I plan to do it myself.

Author’s writing style is very captivating and he seems to be full of examples and testimonials. His genuine desire to teach the techniques to others and his in depth research is prominently visible. Enough of a review. #justreadit.

Finally, as against “good morning, it’s going to be a great day”, how about this version of Maui Habit?

Translation: I see with my eyes, I hear with my ears, I walk on my feet, I taste sweets by my tongue, I speak using my mouth, I work with my hands. I take sound sleep to relax and I get up the next day, This is Divine Grace!

After going through the book, thoughts started coming in my mind. Now we know how to form the habits to attain a certain Goal. They just work. Given.

Please read my next blog where I try to express my views on setting the Goals.
