I feel “Luck” is a form of Uncertainty. The completeness (Dattatreya) is the union of certainty (laws) and uncertainty (randomness). This element is all pervading. Given. And precisely for that reason, called as Datta.
Scientists show us how laws operate in this Universe. Mystics show us the other side, call it miracles, synchronicity (Carl Jung), chance, coincidence, luck.
I think both have their own place. Both emphasize on one part of completeness. That is why, I feel, they complement each other.
If there’s pure Luck, then it would have manifested in chaos. It wouldn’t have given us a sense of purpose to live. On the other side, if there’s pure “Law” which is harsh (really applies everywhere!), then it wouldn’t have given rise to subtle and soft qualities like surrender, humility, mercy. And, by the way, who really kills your ego? Law or uncertainty?
Experience of uncertainty is truly humbling. Effect of knowing something is Pride, Ego!
In sanskrit there is a saying “Vidya Vinayena Shobhate!” It means crown of knowledge suits only to those who are humble. This can be true only in presence of Law (certainty) and Luck (uncertainty).
