Being Hanuman

Hanuman and His Devotion
विद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर राम काज करिबे को आतुर।
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया राम लखन सीता मन बसिया।

Poet saint Tulsidas describes Hanuman as full of knowledge and skills (Vidyavan), full of divine qualities (Guni) and extremely intelligent (Ati Chatur). It is because, Hanuman is Tatpar, that is, ever ready, present and always willing to do, implement, obey Lord Rama’s work, will, order, or His words…almost instantaneously, without taking time to even think! At that very moment! Tatkshan! He uses the word Aatur to connote the “curious impatience” with which Hanuman waits to execute or obey Rama’s further orders, or words!

This, to me, is the most beautiful description of a Surrender. All qualities above, are embodied by the surrender. I am happy (ever joyous) to be His Disciple. And I enjoy (be in Bliss) doing whatever He tells me to do! This is the Doingaspect (Karibe ko) of Hanuman.

Saint Tulsidas doesn’t stop describing Hanuman here. He goes on to say that Hanuman likes to hear (is happy to hear) the virtuous stories of Lord Rama. I would like to interpret this in one more way apart from its literal meaning. No doubt that wherever you hear Ramayana, you experience Hanuman’s presence there. There’re innumerous accounts by so many people of having experienced Hanuman’s presence in some form while hearing Rama Katha.

However, I feel there’s another dimension to this. If we replace hear with experience and at the same time, replace Lord’s virtuous stories (Prabhu charitra) with Prabhu Lila, that is, playful activities of the Lord, the meaning becomes, Hanuman always likes to experience every moment as Lord’s Gift. This is perhaps what is meant by staying in Eternal Bliss. Hanuman is so eager to experience Lord’s Lila. Because, Hanuman sees nothing except Rama, Lakshman and Sita! He installed them in his heart (man basiya). This explains the Beingaspect (sunibe ko) of Hanuman.

I need to be so humble and so dissolved in His Bhakti, that I am able to understand exactly when it is the time to Act, what I need to do and how to do that. Rama gives me the Intuition, shapes up my Intention and gives me Inspiration thus guiding me to act in a right direction. Whatever qualities (vidyavan, guni, ati chatur), or resources that are required to act at that moment, He bestows them to me. This action then becomes the most rightful action. Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam!
