When I start accepting the situation as it is without mixing it with my will (which is of course a reaction) to change it to suit my wants, I start to detach my Self from what is happening. Essentially because Self is independent and separate from all that is going on in my mind, within me.
This practice of acceptance actually gives me the power to rejectevery thing that comes to make me happy or sad. This is not me, that is not me. Anger is not me. Likewise. Every action results in its fruit. I also continue to reject the fruit by saying “idam na mama”, meaning, “this is not mine”. In the power of discrimination lies the ability to reject the falsehood, the Maya, the illusion called World.
Kim Eng, the spiritual teacher, oftentimes says, this Experience is not IT, or This form is not IT. This goes completely in line with the practice of rejecting. This is also described as a practice of “Neti Neti”!
When I realise that by doing something to affect the outcome, I actually worsen the situation, I start accepting the things as they are. And at the same time I continue to reject whatever is happening by saying “This is not IT”! Or in other words, “This is not me”! I am consciousness. I am Brahman. I am Shiva! Aham Brahmasmi!
