Unlearn

Being!

Records are made to be broken, says Terry Vaughn (I fear plagiarism!). A slight modification would be “New year resolutions are made to be unkept or unfulfilled!”

Most often, we talk about “learning (something) from data”. However, there is also something called “unlearning (something) from data”. Let us try for a moment to replace the word data with life, replace the word learning with remembering, replace the word unlearning with forgetting.

We remember the ‘lessons’ from the past while forgetting the past. Now what if the ultimate Lesson that the life teaches us is to ‘Forget and Forgive’? So everything comes down to forgetting. Again let us try to replace the words with their counterparts. Now everything comes down to “unlearning from data”!

While learning is about ‘reducing’ the ‘noise’, unlearning is about ‘appreciating’ the ‘uncertainty’. We have so many ‘experts’ who can do the first task of reducing the noise. I wonder whether we really have that many ‘meek’ to do the second task!

Life has so many things which can be ‘learnt’. However it has only one common thing to ‘teach’. To me, it is ‘appreciating the uncertainty’!

So which one you would like to choose?

1. To become Expert enough in Learning
2. To become Meek enough in Unlearning.
This year I plan to choose #2.
